More Space
There's a number of reasons you can begin to feel cramped in your home. A growing family, working from home, needing more storage, etc. We find a lot with our homeowners a big reason for space is due to making room for in-laws. For example, our clients on Autumn Ridge Road expanded a bedroom, adding an ensuite bathroom and more space in the living area. A unique challenge we found with this project is the homeowner wanted the living room space large and divided enough that both homeowners and in-laws can relax individually. This extra space allows the residents to limit fighting over who gets to control the TV remote. Giving our clients more space has helped to alleviate a number of problems they were previously facing. Their home is now ready for the daily shuffle of extra feet.
Lack of Storage
Another huge reason we have seen people remodel is due to lack of storage. For our clients on Knollwood Drive, they’ve found difficulty finding space for items in their kitchen. The homeowner even mentioned spending a lot of money on organizers and drawer dividers, but still doesn’t find the kitchen completely functional. This lack of space forces them to store extra kitchen equipment such as bakeware and Tupperware in the laundry room cabinets, on the other side of the kitchen. There is only so much organization tactics you can do until you realize the problem may require a contractor.
Not Functional
As you grow, so does your home. As your home ages, features that worked well may begin to decline with function. A room not feeling functional can lead to different outcomes - less time spent in the room, more clutter, less efficient routines, etc. For these homeowners, they were not able to use their lower-level bathroom due to a moisture issue. This led to their daily routines being altered, as the bathroom was not usable. A functioning bath was the homeowner’s priority.
Layout Issues
Our last reason we see in remodeling is layout issues. Our current client contacted us because she was finding trouble moving around the kitchen. As you would enter the area, there would be double ovens right in the walkway. Our client found this frustrating to use while people were maneuvering in and out of the kitchen. She also didn’t like how the space felt so closed off, and interested in opening the wall towards the family room. The client said it best herself, “She doesn’t need a whole new kitchen, would like to definitely get the priorities addressed.”
